Description
I created Blue Ringed Octopus by first kiln‑firing my scrap glass offcuts in purple, mauve and blue hues into a new fused sheet. Because the colours blended during firing, the glass formed a rich, ocean‑inspired base. After the sheet cooled, I cut it into strips and arranged them like flowing octopus tentacles before returning them to the kiln. As the glass softened, the colours shifted into gentle patterns that echoed the movement of an octopus through shallow coastal water. These flowing tones created the ideal foundation for shaping this sculpture, inspired by the distinctive marine creature.
I refined the form by slumping the fused strips over a stainless‑steel mould, which added depth and natural curvature. During each heating stage, the glass moved in soft, organic ways, so I guided the shape as it settled. As a result, the body developed smooth contours while the colours formed natural, ring‑like transitions. Consequently, the sculpture gained a sense of motion inspired by the octopus’s fluid behaviour in the sea.
Blue Ringed Octopus brings bold colour, coastal energy and a touch of mystery to any space. Because its form is compact and expressive, it draws attention without overwhelming a room. In addition, the purple, mauve and blue tones create a cool, calming presence that suits both modern and natural interiors. Each sculpture in this series celebrates the beauty, movement and complexity of Australia’s marine life. Ultimately, this piece tells a story shaped by heat, shaped by colour and shaped by the ocean itself.
