About Sunset Seaweed Serenade II

Sunset Seaweed Serenade II is a unique, kiln‑formed glass sculpture created as a commissioned award for the 2024 Perpetual Valerie Taylor Underwater Photography Award for Excellence, presented by the Northern Beaches Council. The piece honours both artistic craftsmanship and the spirit of underwater exploration.

Drawing inspiration from the original Sunset Seaweed Serenade design, this second commission incorporates the golden kelp found along the Sydney Northern Beaches. Its flowing forms and luminous tones evoke the rhythm of underwater life, celebrating both artistry and the natural marine environment.

The sculpture is created through multiple kiln firings. Each firing allows the glass to soften, settle, and develop gentle movement. Layers of colour build depth and variation, giving the piece a sense of shifting light. These subtle changes make every angle feel alive.

Warm golds, soft greens, and sea‑washed tones blend together to echo the glow of a coastal sunset. The curves suggest seaweed drifting in calm water. Light moves across the surface in soft highlights, creating a quiet sense of motion. The sculpture feels both grounded and fluid, like a moment captured beneath the waves.

This artwork stands as a tribute to the marine world and the people who work to protect it. It reflects the beauty of Australia’s coastal landscapes and the stories held within its underwater ecosystems. The piece also celebrates the skill and patience required in kiln‑formed glass, where every stage demands care and precision.

Sunset Seaweed Serenade II brings warmth, colour, and coastal elegance to any space. It works as a statement piece in a home, gallery, or award collection. The sculpture carries the calm of the ocean and the glow of sunset light, making it a meaningful and memorable artwork for anyone who loves the sea.

The inaugural winner 2024 was Peter McGee, an underwater photographer whose work embodies excellence in capturing the hidden beauty of the ocean.
